Dr. Louis Trepper
A Frenchman, born in 1914, a WWI baby. Psychology degree from the University of Leipzig, attended from 1931 to 1936, when he left Germany out of disgust at the rise of Nazism and pressure from his friends at university, where he had become a student communist leader.
Served in the French Resistance as part of the Maquis du Vercors, and was shot and wounded terribly. He was nursed back to health by a French single mother, Sophie, possibly a Jew. When she was suspected of harboring a member of the resistance, she and her young son were taken by the Germans. Louis hid in fear, and has never forgiven himself for that moment. He believes he loves this woman.
Louis is still a fervent Marxist, and is also an atheist and a skeptic. He does not believe in the supernatural.

Louis has been recruited for his ground-breaking studies in aberrant psychology, especially in analyzing former Waffen SS members and German citizens. His speciality is in the fear reaction in humans. He has taken the assignment because his research has led him to Berlin in search of Sophie, who he fears is dead.
